ROD NISHIKAWA TO SPEAK AT SEPTEMBER 13 MEETING

Our guest for Tuesday, September 13th is Rod Nishikawa of the Greater Sacramento Chapter of Kiwanis. Rod will be sharing his most memorable and rewarding experiences as a Key Club Advisor. Bruce Roberts to be guest at Feb. 8 meeting

Our guest for our Tuesday, Feb. 8, lunch meeting will be Natomas Unified School District Board President Bruce Roberts. He is also an engineer with CalTrans with two children in the school district, as well as being involved with the North Natomas Transportation Management Association. Please join us in hearing from Mr. Roberts.

The meeting is at Straw Hat Pizza at 4441 East Commerce Way (between Arena Blvd. and Del Paso Road) from noon to 1 p.m.

At our February 15 meeting, Charlie Leo from Natomas Charter School and the Benvenuti Performing Arts Center will be our guest.

Baby Item Collection Service Project

Help us collect baby items to be distributed by River City Food Bank.  Recently, the food bank has struggled to have enough baby items available to respond to the needs in our community.  Bring your items (even just a couple items) to any of our Tuesday meetings -- 1st and 3rd Tuesday lunch at Straw Hat or 2nd and 4th Tuesday coffee at Panera Café.

Kiwanis Book Drive

Thank you to the community for donating almost 1600 books, DVDs, and magazines to Friends of North
Natomas Library. We got books donated at Straw Hat Natomas, Aim Mail Center, and PostNet.  Special thanks to Karen Thomas, Friends volunteer who worked with me to coordinate the event. 

It was an incredibly successful event and we look forward to repeating it in the near future.

The 18th Annual Kiwanis Family House Red and White Ball will be held at the Old Sugar Mill in Clarksburg on Saturday, February 13, 2010. This evening of semi-formal dress, fine food & wine with the stylized smooth jazz sound of Marcelle, begins at 6:30pm.

Carvalho Family Winery has generously donated their Galeria do Vinho and Barrel Room to Kiwanians for our very special event. Tickets are $47.50/each and includes dinner. Dinner will be catered with a choice of prime rib, salmon or vegetarian lasagna. Carvalho Family wines and soft drinks will be available at our no-host bar.

Bring your best smile with you! Carvalho Family Winery’s barrel room will be transformed into a raffle extravaganza with a photographer available to capture the Valentine evening with you and your date.

Meeting Highlights - December 15, 2009

Dr. General Davie, the interim superintendent of the Natomas Unified School District, was our guest speaker today. In addition to having previously served as superintendent for NUSD, Dr. Davie is also a Kiwanian and currently serves as president of the Carmichael club. It was both an honor and treat to have him with us for the meeting.

The superintedent presented an update on the budget situation for the district, and outlined his strategy for reversing a trend.

During the announcements portion of the meeting, there were plenty of plans announced for upcoming community service, including a work day at the Kiwanis Family House on Sunday, February 7. This will be a major project assisting in laying a brick patio and other services around the facility.

This was our last regularly scheduled lunch meeting for 2009. There will be a breakfast meeting at Panera Bread on Del Paso Road on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 7:30 a.m.

Dr. General Davie to speak at next Kiwanis meeting

On December 15, 2009, the Kiwanis Club of Natomas will host a presentation by the Natomas Unified School District (NUSD) Interim Superintendent Dr. General S. Davie, Jr. Dr. Davie served as NUSD superintendent from 1991to 1998. Dr. Davie, who was superintendent of the San Juan Unified School District from 1998-2005, will serve as NUSD interim superintendent while the NUSD Board searches for a permanent replacement for Dr. Steve Farrar. Dr. Davie starts his new job Dec. 1.

Dr. Davie has won praise from educators, parents and elected officials for his leadership skills, experience with budget issues and efforts to improve community relations.

California Secretary of Education Glen Thomas, whose children attended school in the San Juan Unified District, said Davie is an effective communicator with “outstanding” interpersonal skills.

“In retirement, Dr. Davie has continued to serve students and schools through various improvement processes and efforts,” Thomas stated. “And he has remained active in the community, including serving on the board of the Sacramento Children’s Home and as President of the Carmichael Kiwanis Club.”

“General has the skills that will be helpful in assisting a district to navigate the troubled financial times we now face,” Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools Dave Gordon stated in a letter of recommendation. “He works well with employee organizations and Board members, and he is a man of the highest integrity.”

Dr. Davie, a resident of Citrus Heights, has been active in a number of regional and statewide educational groups including the Association of California School Administrators and the California Department of Education K-16 Master Plan Statewide Task Force. He was named “Superintendent of the Year” in 1996 by the Sacramento Urban League and received the Marcus Foster Award from the Association of California School Administrators.

The Kiwanis Club of Natomas is part of Kiwanis International, which includes 9,000 clubs with more than 300,000 members in 96 nations. In 2008, Kiwanis clubs around the world donated more than $100 million and almost 6 million volunteer hours for community service projects worldwide.
